Description
The 1934 (D) Peace Dollar represents a Denver Mint issue from the Peace Dollars 1921-1935 series. With a mintage of 1.6 million, this is a scarce issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 44% of the year's production. The obverse features a youthful Liberty facing left wearing a radiate crown, designed after sculptor Anthony de Francisci's wife Teresa and the reverse displays a bald eagle perched on a rock above the word PEACE, with rays of sunlight. Production resumed after a five-year hiatus (1929-1933) driven by the Great Depression. The 1934-S is a semi-key date. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $152 to $978 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
