Description

Featuring thread-like die impressions in the hair strands above TR in TRVST — the Peace Dollar's distinctive Latin spelling of TRUST — VAM-2B on the 1934-D Peace Dollar was discovered by Bill Toland in August 2011. The plate designation II1 - B2a classifies this as Obverse Die Class II (normal die), die pair 1, with Reverse Die Class B2a. Rated I-2 (significant) and R-5 (estimated 200 to 400 known). Thread-like die impressions suggest that foreign material — possibly a thin metallic fiber or thread — became trapped between the hub and the die during the sinking process, or that a surface defect on the die itself created fine raised lines resembling hair-thin threads on the struck coin. These delicate features are best observed under magnification with angled lighting that casts shadows along the thread lines. Denver Mint production. The 1934-D Peace Dollar belongs to the penultimate year of the series, as production concluded in 1935. Anthony de Francisci's design uses the archaic TRVST spelling as a classical design element.
