1934-D VAM-8

Description

Discovered by David Close in December 1999 and revised in 2017, the 1934-D VAM-8 carries die classification III 1 with attribution code B2f under the title Doubled Leg Feathers, rated I-2 R-5. The obverse presents double die scratches adjacent to the rim from L to R of LIBERTY — die preparation marks tracing a path along the upper obverse field. The reverse shows slightly doubled rear leg feathers and a doubled lower olive branch on the left side, confirming hub doubling on two naturalistic design elements. The D mint mark is medium size type II and appears filled on some specimens — a condition where die grease partially obstructs the incuse mint mark cavity. The 1934-D Peace Dollar was produced at Denver during one of the final years of the series, which ended in 1935. David Close's 1999 discovery and the 2017 revision reflect the long-term nature of VAM research, where initial documentation is periodically refined as additional specimens surface and imaging technology improves.
