Description
David Close discovered this variety in 2013, cataloging it as VAM-2C — a Medium D with Die Scratch Below D on the 1934-D Peace Dollar. Plate designation: 2C II1 - B2a. Rated I-2 R-5, with an estimated 200-400 known examples. The obverse carries a thin, shallow, long vertical die scratch below the D of GOD, accompanied by a short scratch below the left side of G — surface marks serving as the primary attribution diagnostics. These scratches were incised into the die during production and transfer as raised lines on struck coins. Importantly, VAM-2C shares the same die as VAM-1C, establishing a die linkage that traces production sequences at Denver. The 1934-D holds historical significance as one of the final Peace Dollar issues — along with the 1935 Philadelphia strikes, it represents the last production of de Francisci's design before discontinuation. Peace Dollar coinage would not be attempted again until the controversial 1964-D, which was melted. Denver Mint, 90% silver.
