Description

Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait yields another extra eyelid variety on WDDO-004 of the 1928 Philadelphia wheat cent, where the doubled eyelid appears south of the main eyelid — a downward displacement indicating the secondary hub impression shifted the portrait slightly lower than the primary. A small die gouge resembling a dot to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY serves as the key obverse die marker, providing an independent confirmation point beyond the doubled die characteristic itself. No significant reverse die markers were recorded. The Wexler Team assigned this Wexler Variety ID: 1928 1¢ WDDO-004, with no other known cross-references. Philadelphia produced approximately 134.1 million wheat cents in 1928, a healthy mintage that placed enough specimens into circulation for variety specialists to identify multiple doubled die obverses across the date. The extra eyelid south of the main eyelid is a specific diagnostic statement — south meaning directly below rather than at an angle — that distinguishes WDDO-004 from other 1928 doubled dies where the eyelid doubling may appear at different orientations relative to the primary feature. The die gouge dot to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY is particularly useful because dots and gouges are unique to individual working dies, surviving intact through the die's entire service life and appearing on every coin struck from that die. Fourth in the obverse doubled die census for the date, WDDO-004 represents continued documentation of the Lincoln wheat cent's extensive variety catalog, which spans the series' fifty-year production run from 1909 through 1958.
