Description

Presenting one of the most visually distinctive forms of hub doubling found on Victor David Brenner's obverse, this Lincoln Wheat Cent is cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1928 1-cent WDDO-002: an extra eyelid shows below the main eyelid, creating a pronounced doubled contour around Lincoln's eye that gives the portrait an unmistakable altered appearance. Doubling on facial features, particularly the eyelid, is prized among variety collectors because it transforms the coin's focal point rather than merely broadening peripheral inscriptions. A supportive die marker confirms the attribution: a small die gouge — appearing as a raised dot on struck coins — can be found between the upper 9 and 2 in the date, providing an independent diagnostic visible at moderate magnification. No significant reverse markers have been documented. The 1928 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams.
