1928 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1928-01

Description

ADC-1c-1928-01 This 1928P Lincoln cent is unusual in two ways; it is a tripled die and also has a tilted die clash with a rotation. This coin comes to us courtesy of Bob Piazza. An examination of this coin shows the partial letters RIBU clashed into the area below the bust of Lincoln. The corresponding die clash can be seen on the reverse die as a line through the letters LURIBU. Oddly enough, there are more clash marks found in the obverse die. The N of CENT can be partially seen clashed below Lincoln’s chin, while the E of ONE can be seen partially clashed just to the left of the date. A partial C of CENT can be seen just to the left of Lincoln’s collar. While these clash marks are present on the obverse die, the reverse die is lacking any corresponding die clashes. Due to the curvature of both dies, it is thought that the clash marks left in the middle of the die are a separate event form the clash that was left below Lincoln’s bust. This would make the coin having two clash events. The tripled die can be seen to the left. Lincoln has three separate eye lids, indicated by the white arrows.
