Description

An atypical die clash is visible on the obverse of this 1865 Indian Head cent (Plain 5 variety). An atypical die clash occurs when the dies strike each other at an unusual angle or under abnormal conditions, producing clash marks in unexpected positions. In this case, the wreath and "C" from the reverse are clashed in front of the Indian's nose on the obverse, and the atypical clash appears to have occurred twice. The 1865 Plain 5 variety features a shorter, simpler "5" in the date compared to the Fancy 5 variety's tall, ornate digit with pronounced serifs.
