Description

Second in the Wexler catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1928-D Lincoln Wheat Cent, WRPM-002 records a die where the Denver Mint's D mintmark was hand-punched more than once, creating overlapping letter images visible on struck coins. Throughout the 1920s, the process of adding mintmarks to working dies was entirely manual — an engraver at the Denver Mint selected a small steel D punch, positioned it on the reverse die below the wheat ears, and drove it in with a mallet blow. Any positional discrepancy between the first and second impressions produced the doubled mintmark imagery that defines a repunched mintmark variety. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1928D-1MM-001, this variety benefits from dual attribution across both the Wexler and Coppercoins reference systems, giving collectors and dealers two independent identification pathways. The 1928-D cent was produced in moderate quantities at the Denver Mint during the later years of the Roaring Twenties, and RPM varieties from this era serve as tangible artifacts of the handcraft methods that characterized early twentieth-century die preparation at branch mint facilities.
