1928-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, the 1928-D Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-002 displays an extra eyelid visible to the south of Lincoln's main eyelid on Victor David Brenner's portrait — a form of doubled die variety where the secondary impression creates a parallel line beneath the primary facial feature. The obverse die markers include two parallel die scratches running SW to NE in Lincoln's vest south of the date, along with die gouges at the rim above GOD, while the reverse shows no significant markers. Eyelid doubling is among the more recognizable forms of doubled die variety because the human eye naturally notices asymmetry in facial features, making the extra eyelid detectable even on lower-grade specimens where more subtle forms of doubling might be lost. The 1928-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint, and no other cross-references are currently known for this variety. The combination of the doubled eyelid on the obverse and the distinctive SW/NE die scratches in the vest area provides multiple diagnostic features, making WDDO-002 attributable through either the primary doubling or the secondary die markers.
