1928-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
ErrorDescription
One of the more visually distinctive doubled die varieties in the Lincoln Wheat Cent series, the 1928-D WDDO-003 shows an extra eyelid to the south of Lincoln's main eyelid on Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait. Eyelid doubling is among the most sought-after forms of hub doubling because the human eye naturally focuses on the portrait's eye area, making the secondary contour immediately recognizable even under modest magnification. The southward displacement indicates the hub shifted in that direction between impressions, creating a shadow eyelid below the primary one. Both obverse and reverse are documented in very late die state (VLDS) — the most extreme die-wear classification, indicating known specimens come from a die used well beyond its normal service life. The VLDS condition means original die markers may have been substantially obliterated by die erosion, and an earlier die state specimen could reveal markers not yet documented. Attributed by the Wexler Team under variety ID 1928-D 1c WDDO-003, no cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. Struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc at 3.11 grams. Focus examination on Lincoln's eye for the secondary eyelid below the main one.
