Description

On a 1928 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, this rim cud documents a major die break where a section of the die rim fractured and separated entirely, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during each subsequent strike to produce a raised, featureless mass along the coin's edge. Cuds are among the most visually dramatic die errors a collector can encounter — the smooth, blank area contrasts sharply with the surrounding design detail, making even small cuds immediately recognizable without magnification. The "R" suffix in CU-1C-1928D-01R designates this break on the reverse die. Denver Mint Wheat Cents from the late 1920s were produced in substantial quantities — the 1928-D saw a mintage of approximately 31.2 million pieces — and the high-speed production placed considerable mechanical stress on dies, increasing the likelihood of rim fractures. Lincoln Wheat Cents from 1909 through 1958 remain one of the most actively studied series for die breaks, and cuds on Denver Mint examples from the 1920s are documented but not commonly encountered.
