1928-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Cataloged as UVC-1111, DMR-002, this 1928 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a repunched mintmark with the D/D positioned to the Southeast. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B shows obverse and reverse in MDS, and Stage C is LDS (unconfirmed). Repunched mintmarks on Lincoln Wheat Cents resulted from the hand-punching process used to apply individual mint mark letter punches to each working die, a practice that continued at the U.S. Mint through the mid-20th century. Struck in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc at the Denver Mint, the 1928-D Wheat Cent was produced during the prosperous late 1920s when Denver mintages remained robust. The D/D Southeast repunch direction indicates the initial D punch landed slightly to the northwest of the intended position before the corrected punch was applied, leaving traces of the first impression visible under magnification.
