Description

Produced at the San Francisco Mint during the final year of World War I's immediate aftermath, RCD-1c-1919S-01R records the first cataloged reverse retained cud on the 1919-S Lincoln Wheat Cent. Cross-referenced as LC-19S-3R Ret in the LC cataloging system, this variety benefits from independent verification across two attribution frameworks. The "R" suffix confirms the retained cud affects the reverse — the wheat-ears side designed by Victor David Brenner — where a die fragment cracked loose along the rim but remained wedged in place, transferring a raised or softly struck zone onto each subsequent coin. Retained cuds differ from full cuds in that the broken fragment never fully separates, creating an intermediate stage of die failure that can persist through hundreds or thousands of additional strikes before the piece finally detaches or the die is retired. San Francisco's 1919 cent mintage of approximately 139 million pieces was modest compared to Philadelphia's output, giving varieties from this mint a scarcity advantage. Bronze composition, 95% copper.
