Description

This 1919 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays a rim cud at 4:00 on the reverse with a die crack running inward from the cud to the wheat stalk. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates entirely, leaving a cavity that fills with planchet metal under striking pressure to produce a raised, featureless mass at the coin's edge. The attached die crack records the fracture path continuing into the die face beyond the point of separation, documenting the direction in which the failure was still propagating. San Francisco struck 139,760,000 cents in 1919, and the date carries one of the deepest cud inventories in the Wheat cent series.
