Description

This 1919 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays an exceptionally broad rim cud on the reverse running from 3:00 to 9:00, divided into two segments by a small unbroken section at 4:00. A cud spanning half the circumference represents a terminal die failure, well past the point at which a die would normally be pulled from service. The narrow bridge of intact rim at 4:00 marks where the fracture propagated around the die in two separate arcs that had not yet joined. Breaks of this magnitude on the 1919-S rank among the largest documented rim failures for the date.
