1919-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

RPM-001 is the primary repunched mintmark variety for the 1919-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, cataloged UVC-010 and DMR-002. The mintmark was punched into the working die at least twice, leaving a secondary impression offset from the primary S. Three die stages document the variety's progression across the die's working life. Stage A (EDS) shows a wide but light secondary mintmark; the reverse is MDS at this early obverse state. Stage B (MDS) presents a medium secondary mintmark on both sides simultaneously. Stage C (LDS) carries only a weak secondary mintmark remnant as both sides enter their late-die-state condition, with the reverse advancing to VLDS. The 1919-S Wheat Cent was struck at San Francisco during the era of hand-applied mintmarks, when punch placement was subject to human variation — a direct cause of repunching. The S mintmark appears on the reverse below the date on Lincoln cents of this period. RPM-001's status as the leading repunched mintmark in this date-mint makes it the most-referenced variety in the 1919-S RPM population.
