PC-1c-1906-04R Pre-Cud
Error
Description
Bearing the cross-reference JCc-1906_009 and cataloged on September 16, 2019, the PC-1c-1906-04R is a pre-cud variety discovered on the 1906 Indian Head cent. A pre-cud represents the earliest detectable stage of an emerging die rim break, where fine interconnected cracks have formed along the rim to begin outlining a section that may eventually separate as a retained or full cud, but at this stage the bounded area has not yet displaced from the die surface. James B. Longacre's Indian Head cent design was in its 48th year of production in 1906, just three years before the series' end in 1909 and its replacement by Victor David Brenner's Lincoln cent. Philadelphia struck approximately 96.0 million Indian Head cents in 1906, one of the higher mintages in the series' later years as the coin remained a workhorse of everyday commerce. The JCc-1906_009 cross-reference connects this variety to an independent attribution system that has cataloged Indian Head cent die varieties, providing a secondary source for confirming the identification. Pre-cuds on Indian Head cents are documented less frequently than on Lincoln wheat cents, partly because the shorter series span (1859-1909) and generally lower mintages produced fewer total die failures, and partly because the heavier copper-nickel composition of early issues (pre-1864) and the bronze alloy of later issues both placed different stress profiles on dies compared to later Lincoln cent production. The 04R designation indicates this is the fourth pre-cud documented for the 1906 date. Collectors should use 15-20x magnification with oblique lighting to trace the interconnected crack pattern along the rim, looking for the characteristic boundary geometry that distinguishes a pre-cud from ordinary linear die cracks.
