Description

First documented reverse cud on the 1906 Indian Head Cent, CU-1c-1906-01R records a major die break at the rim where a section of the reverse die fractured and separated completely, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during subsequent strikes to create the raised featureless blob characteristic of full cuds. Unlike retained cuds where the broken section stays in place, or pre-cuds where only a crack has formed, a full cud represents the terminal stage of die rim failure — the fragment has detached entirely, and the resulting void in the die surface transfers as a smooth, raised mass at the coin's edge that obliterates whatever design elements occupied that area. The 1906 Indian Head Cent was produced near the end of James Barton Longacre's design's fifty-year run — only three years remained before the Lincoln Cent replaced it in 1909. Philadelphia struck approximately 96.0 million Indian Head Cents in 1906, a substantial mintage that consumed many die pairs across the year's production.
