Spanning a substantial arc from 6 o'clock to 9 o'clock on the reverse, this pre-cud die crack on the 1893 Indian Head cent extends through the lower-left wreath area. A pre-cud represents the penultimate stage of a specific type of die failure: the crack has reached the rim on both ends, fully delineating the section of die that will eventually break away, but the metal remains attached. Once separation occurs, the result is a cud error showing a raised, featureless area on the struck coin where the missing die fragment no longer impressed design detail. The extensive length of this crack, covering roughly one-quarter of the reverse circumference, indicates severe structural compromise in the die. The path through the wreath design elements suggests the stress propagated along the relief transitions where the wreath meets the field. The 1893 Indian Head cent had a mintage of approximately 46 million pieces at the Philadelphia Mint.
