Description

The year 1893 was a landmark in American numismatics and economic history, and this cud die break emerged from that consequential moment. The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago prompted the first United States commemorative coins — half dollars honoring the event — while the Panic of 1893 triggered one of the most severe economic depressions of the nineteenth century. Through it all, the Philadelphia Mint continued Indian Head Cent production, striking approximately 46.6 million pieces in bronze composition. CU-1c-1893-01 is the first documented cud die for this date, cataloged in the Cuds on Coins reference system. A cud forms when a portion of the die rim fractures and breaks away, leaving a void that fills with metal on subsequent strikes to produce a raised featureless mass along the coin's edge. Each cud is unique to the specific die that failed, and attribution requires comparing the cud's position against published reference images. No additional cross-references have been recorded.
