Description

Personally attributed by Leroy Van Allen — co-creator of the VAM classification system — following his June 1984 discovery and revised in 2014, this 1893-CC Morgan Dollar is cataloged as 5 (revised) III2 4 – C3a with die pair (178). The obverse (III2 4) displays doubled Liberty’s profile across the forehead, nose, lips, and chin, with the eye-front slightly doubled as well, creating a comprehensive doubling of the facial contour. A die marker of several horizontal die scratches below the lower right hair vee provides secondary attribution. The reverse (C3a) shows the mintmark centered. The 1893-CC is among the scarcer Carson City Morgan Dollar issues, struck during the final year of coinage operations at the Nevada mint, and any documented die variety on this key date carries enhanced significance due to the limited number of surviving specimens available for study.
