Error
Description
Discovered by noted numismatic researcher Bill Fivaz in October 1983, the 1893-CC Morgan Dollar VAM-4 is cataloged as Doubled 3, Far Date, CC Tilted Left, with the designation 4 III2 3 C3c (178). The obverse, Die III2 Position 3, shows doubling at the top left of the 3 in the date, which is set further right than normal — the Far Date characteristic. The CC mintmark is tilted left, adding another attribution layer to this Carson City issue. Some examples have been found with a grease-filled first C, cataloged as FD 1 by VSS. The 1893-CC is the final year of Morgan Dollar production at Carson City, making it a key date with strong collector demand. Fivaz, co-author of the Cherrypickers' Guide to Rare Die Varieties, identified this variety early in systematic Morgan Dollar die study. The combination of doubled date digit, far date position, and tilted mintmark provides three independent diagnostics for this scarce Carson City issue.
