Description
The 1885 (O) Morgan Dollar is a dollar from the New Orleans Mint, belonging to the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. With a mintage of 9.2 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 32% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. The 1885-CC is another key Carson City date that survived primarily through Treasury hoards. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South. Estimated market value ranges from $87 to $314 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
