Description

Revised in 2010, the 1885-O VAM-1A Morgan Dollar is classified as III2 1 - C3a with die pairing number 181, carrying the designation "Rusted Wing." The reverse (C3a) exhibits the top of the eagle's left wing and neck covered with raised spots caused by a pitted or rusted die — a condition where moisture or chemical exposure attacked the die steel surface, creating small cavities that transferred as raised bumps on every coin struck from the affected die. This die rusting represents one of the more dramatic forms of die deterioration, as the raised pitting pattern is often visible without magnification and creates a distinctive textured appearance across the affected area. Additionally, the reverse shows very slight doubling on ERICA and a couple of leaves in the right wreath, adding hubbing-related features to the die deterioration diagnosis. VAMWorld community notes suggest this reverse die may be shared with the 1885-O VAM-17, and collectors are advised to check for date position and misplaced date features to distinguish between the two varieties if the same reverse die was indeed paired with different obverse dies. The Morgan Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1885 from 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. The 1885-O had a mintage of approximately 9.2 million pieces, and the New Orleans Mint's Gulf Coast location with its high humidity may have contributed to the die rusting conditions documented on this reverse die — though die rust could develop at any facility where dies were stored in less than ideal conditions between production runs. The extensive pitting across the eagle's wing and neck area provides an unmistakable visual signature for this variety, making it one of the more easily identifiable die states in the 1885-O VAM family.
