1885-O VAM-29
Error
Description
Discovered August 2010, the 1885-O VAM-29 Morgan dollar is classified 29 III2 21 with a C3a reverse, designated Doubled 885, Dash 8. The obverse die exhibits a large vertical shift across the 885 digits. The left 8 shows a curved bar at the lower right inside of its lower loop; the right 8 displays a short spike in the same position. The 5 carries a line at the bottom inside of its lower loop. A thin curved dash above the tenth denticle from the right of the neck point serves as a key die marker. The date sits at the left edge of normal lateral position, separating this from the similar VAM-9, which also doubles 885 but places the date further right and lacks the dash. DPIS rates this marriage LE3RE4. To differentiate from VAM-9, focus on the leftward date and the curved denticle dash under moderate magnification.
