Description

DELISTED — became VAM-18A. Originally discovered in May 2009 and delisted in 2011, 1885-O VAM-27 is now attributed as VAM-18A. The variety was catalogued as 27 III2 19 · C3a — Far Date, Doubled Ear, with the obverse showing a far date position and slight doubling on the bottom inside of Liberty's ear. The reverse C3a carried a Small O mintmark. Following a die-marriage review, researchers determined that the defining characteristics of VAM-27 matched an already catalogued marriage and merged the attribution into VAM-18A. Collectors who acquired coins attributed as 1885-O VAM-27 should treat them as VAM-18A attributions. The 1885-O Morgan dollar in 90% silver had a New Orleans mintage of approximately 9 million pieces, and the date is well represented in the VAM census. Far-date and ear-doubling combinations are among the more frequently studied obverse features in 1885-O die attribution. Rarity at the time of listing: R-5, estimated 31 to 100 known, available in lower uncirculated grades.
