1885-O VAM-3

Description

Discovered by George Mallis in July 1964 — co-author of the definitive Van Allen-Mallis reference that gave the VAM system its name — this 1885 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar variety is designated VAM-3 and classified as "Doubled 18" for the visible doubling on the 1 and 8 of the date. Specifically, the 1 shows doubling below the upper crossbar, while the first 8 exhibits slight doubling at the top right inside of the upper loop. The VAM plate notation 3 III2 3 - C3a identifies the obverse as die class III, die pair 2, with reverse die class C3a, and the die pair number 181 provides a unique identifier within the comprehensive VAM cataloging framework. This variety is documented as available in both Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike surface conditions — a significant detail for collectors, since DMPL Morgan Dollars command substantial premiums for their exceptional reflectivity. The 1885-O is generally available in high grades, but the combination of the VAM-3 doubled date attribution with a Prooflike or Deep Mirror Prooflike surface creates a coin of considerably greater numismatic significance than an unattributed example.
