1882-S VAM-31

Description

Discovered in 2013 by Brent Fogelberg, the 1882-S VAM-31 is classified III2 21 - C3a (Doubled 882) at rarity unknown. This 90% silver Morgan Dollar from the San Francisco Mint exhibits substantial doubling across three date numerals: the left 8 shows doubling at left inside of the upper loop and slightly at right outside of both loops, the right 8 is doubled at the top outside of the upper loop and left and right outside of the lower loop, and the 2 is doubled at top outside and right outside. A small die chip on the back edge of the lower cap appears as a die marker on later die states but is absent on early impressions. The triple-digit doubling on 882 makes this variety identifiable under moderate magnification, as each numeral shows its own distinct doubling direction and strength. George T. Morgan's dollar, struck at 412.5 grains, was produced in enormous quantities at San Francisco in 1882, and the systematic doubling across three consecutive digits suggests the hub was displaced during a single hubbing event rather than through progressive shifting.
