1882-S VAM-13

Description

The 1882-S Morgan Dollar VAM-13, designated Doubled Date, was discovered by Ted Eiben in June 1972. The doubling is present on each of the four date digits, with specific characteristics noted for each: the 1 shows doubling on its base and upper serif, the first 8 displays a die chip at the top inside of its upper loop (noted by Leroy Van Allen himself), the second 8 carries its own displaced impression, and the 2 shows doubling along its lower curve and tail. The die chip within the upper loop of the first 8 — a detail preserved in the LVA note — provides a particularly reliable secondary marker for attribution when the date doubling is worn or softened in circulated specimens. The 1882-S Morgan Dollar is a 90% silver coin struck at the San Francisco Mint. VAM-13 was documented during the period when Ted Eiben was actively contributing new discoveries to the growing Morgan Dollar variety literature, and the LVA annotation confirms Leroy Van Allen's own examination of the variety — the V in the VAM designation standing for Van Allen himself.
