1882-S VAM-26

Description

Martin Field made a second discovery in the 1882-S Morgan dollar population — VAM-26 — in September 1980, two years after attributing VAM-21. Catalogued as 26 III2 18 C3a — Doubled 882 — it shares the III2 18 obverse hub with VAM-21: the first 8 doubled slightly at the left outside and right inside of its upper loop and at the right outside of its lower loop; the second 8 doubled strongly at the left outside of its upper loop across both loops; the 2 doubled correspondingly. The reverse classification for VAM-26 is C3a rather than the C3b of VAM-21, and this reverse die distinction — along with specific die marker differences — is the key separator between Field's two discoveries. That both share the III2 18 obverse while pairing with different reverse dies illustrates the die-marriage approach central to VAM collecting: a single obverse die may serve multiple reverse dies across a production run, and documenting those pairings is the foundation of systematic Morgan dollar research. =1882-S VAM-26 Doubled 882= Discovered by Martin Field, September 1980.
