1882-S VAM-25

Description

Discovered by Martin Field in December 1979, the 1882-S VAM-25 is classified as III2 15, C3b with a doubled date and an S mint mark tilted to the left. Every digit in the date shows doubling: the 1 is doubled at the top left of the lower crossbar, the first 8 on the right side of both loops with a die chip between the loops on the right side, the second 8 at the top outside of the upper loop and right outside of the lower loop, and the 2 at the top and right outside of the upper loop with a die chip on the surface at the right side of the lower crossbar. The date shows a slight slant with the 2 sitting higher than the 1. On the reverse, the mint mark appears filled and tilted to the left. The comprehensiveness of the date doubling — affecting all four digits with distinctive characteristics on each — makes this variety identifiable under moderate magnification. San Francisco Morgan Dollars from 1882 had a large mintage of over 9.2 million pieces, and the tilted filled mint mark on the reverse serves as a quick initial screening point before confirming the detailed date doubling.
