1882-S VAM-17A
Error
Description
Classified III2 5 under die pair 182, VAM-17A for the 1882 San Francisco Morgan Dollar carries the designation C3c (Doubled 882, S/S, Die Chip Left Wreath). The obverse die (III2 5) shows the 1 slightly doubled below the upper crossbar, the first 8 doubled on the right outside of both loops and the bottom left outside, the second 8 doubled on the right outside of both loops, and the 2 doubled at the bottom left outside. The mint mark displays an S over S repunch, adding a second attribution element. On the reverse, a die chip on the left side of the wreath provides the third diagnostic that completes the C3c designation — combining doubled date digits, repunched mint mark, and reverse die feature. The breadth of doubling across four date digits is notable, as many Morgan Dollar VAMs show doubling confined to one or two numerals. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver, the 1882-S was produced in substantial quantity. The A suffix on VAM-17A denotes a die state or sub-variety distinction from the base VAM-17 listing, typically indicating a later die state with additional markers.
