1882-S VAM-12

Description

Discovered by Maurice Dubreuil in February 1975, the 1882-S Morgan Dollar VAM-12 is classified III2 11 C3a: Doubled 882 — one of the earlier documented date-doubling discoveries in the 1882-S variety series. The obverse doubling affects all three numerals: the first 8 is doubled slightly on the lower right outside and lower left inside of the upper loop; the second 8 is doubled slightly on the top left outside of the upper loop and the right outside of the lower loop; the 2 is doubled on the right outside. An additional obverse die marker is present: the first U in PLURIBUS shows a shallow die gouge visible as a diagonal line inside the letter. On the reverse, the C3a die is described as a normal die for this pairing. Struck in 90% silver, the 1882-S Morgan Dollar was produced at the San Francisco Mint, designed by George T. Morgan. VAM-12's date-doubling characteristics, first documented nearly fifty years ago, remain among the reference points against which later discoveries in the 1882-S doubled date census are compared in the Van Allen-Mallis classification system.
