Encompassing tokens, medals, and pattern coins bearing George Washington's likeness, Washington Pieces constitute one of the most significant collecting areas in American numismatics. Produced both in England by Birmingham manufacturers and in America, they include the 1783 Unity States cent with its famous legend error, military bust tokens, Liberty and Security halfpennies, Success medals, inaugural medals from 1789, and proposed coinage patterns from 1792. Washington reportedly objected to placing his image on official coins as too monarchical, and Congress chose Liberty figures instead. The Baker catalog (1885) provides the traditional numbering while the Musante GW catalog offers the modern comprehensive reference. Struck primarily in copper but also in silver, pewter, white metal, and rarely gold, these pieces range from common types to extreme rarities. They document Washington's evolution from military commander to president to national icon, preserving the earliest numismatic portraits of America's founding father across nearly two decades of production by diverse manufacturers.
