Portraying George Washington in military uniform — typically a Continental Army officer's coat with epaulettes and sometimes a cockade hat — the Military Bust tokens constitute a major category within the Washington Pieces series that celebrates Washington's role as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. These copper tokens, measuring approximately 28 mm in diameter and attributed to British manufacture, were produced during the 1780s and 1790s by private die sinkers in Birmingham and London who supplied tokens to the Anglo-American market. The military portrait represented a deliberate iconographic choice with significant political implications: while some contemporaries urged that Washington be depicted in civilian dress to emphasize republican principles and the peaceful transition from military to civilian authority, the military bust design celebrated the martial leadership that made independence possible and appealed to the patriotic sentiments of the American public.
