Description

Presenting a more compact portrait than either the Large Bust (Baker 1) or standard Draped Bust (Baker 2-3) types, this 1783 Washington & Independence cent with plain edge is cataloged as Baker 2A, Musante GW-104A, and Whitman 10315. The small bust die renders Washington's profile at reduced scale, creating more open field space. The plain edge is the simplest configuration, distinguishing this from engrailed, grained, or lettered edge specimens. Like all 1783 Washington & Independence tokens, this was manufactured in Birmingham, England, where the token industry produced copper pieces for the American market. The obverse legend WASHINGTON & INDEPENDENCE encircles the portrait; the reverse features a wreath with ONE CENT. The small bust plain edge variety is relatively uncommon, and Baker's catalog, Musante's GW system, and Whitman's guide all assign distinct identifiers, reflecting recognition as a separate collectible type. The small bust format may represent a different die sinker's interpretation or a deliberate design variation testing market preference among Birmingham manufacturers.

Rarity Notes

Scarce. Small bust plain edge is relatively uncommon.
