About This Coin
The Georgius Triumpho tokens, struck in copper at approximately 9 grams with a 28 mm diameter and plain edge, are among the most satirically charged pieces in the Washington series. The obverse legend GEORGIUS TRIUMPHO, Latin for "George Triumphant," appears alongside a crude bust that has been interpreted as either a genuine tribute to Washington or a satirical commentary on the perceived monarchical tendencies of the new American government. The reverse bears the legend VOCE POPOLI ("Voice of the People"), a phrase that simultaneously invokes democratic principles and echoes the VOCE POPULI Irish halfpennies that circulated widely in colonial America. Manufactured in Britain, likely at a Birmingham token works, these pieces were produced for the American market during the late 1780s or early 1790s when Washington's political role generated both admiration and suspicion. The deliberate ambiguity of the Georgius Triumpho legend is central to the piece's enduring fascination: "George Triumphant" could celebrate Washington's military victories and political leadership, or it could mock what some critics saw as quasi-regal pretensions. The crude portrait style reinforces this interpretive uncertainty, as it could represent either incompetent die cutting or deliberate caricature. Collectors and scholars have debated the satirical versus commemorative intent for generations, and this unresolved question gives the Georgius Triumpho a cultural richness that extends beyond its numismatic significance.
