Description

Cataloged as Baker 9, Musante GW-101, and Whitman 10260, this 1783 GEORGIVS TRIUMPHO halfpenny token was struck in England to celebrate Washington's triumph in the American Revolutionary War, with the Latin inscription translating directly as "George Triumphant." The obverse features a laureate bust facing right — the laurel wreath being the classical Roman symbol of military victory — accompanied by the triumphant legend that explicitly celebrates Washington as the victorious commander who secured American independence. The reverse displays a seated Liberty figure holding a pole and Phrygian cap — the liberty cap that had become the universal symbol of freedom from tyranny — creating a composition that directly links Washington's military leadership to the philosophical ideals of liberty that justified the Revolution. British token manufacturers, recognizing the commercial potential of Washington's immense popularity, produced this and similar pieces for both the American market and the growing community of British collectors interested in American affairs. The Latin title GEORGIVS TRIUMPHO deliberately echoes the Roman triumphal tradition, where victorious generals processed through the streets of Rome to public acclaim — an association that would have resonated with the neoclassical sensibilities of late 18th-century audiences. Moderately scarce, the Georgivs Triumpho halfpenny holds a distinctive position among Washington tokens for its explicit victory celebration and classical triumphalist imagery that sets it apart from the more common portrait-and-eagle combinations.

Rarity Notes
