Description

Medium southward spread on Washington's eyelid accompanied by light spread on the nostril identifies this first documented doubled die obverse for a 2024 American Women Quarter. Tracked by VarietyVista with die markers still awaiting full assignment (UVC-???? and DMR-00?), the die shows Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state (EDS), with Stages B (MDS) and C (LDS) unconfirmed. Eyelid doubling is one of the most immediately recognizable forms of doubled die variety on Washington Quarter obverses because the secondary eyelid impression creates a visible doubled line that is relatively easy to detect under low magnification. The American Women Quarters program (2022-2025) features five new reverse designs annually honoring women who have contributed to American history and culture, while maintaining the Laura Gardin Fraser profile portrait of George Washington on the obverse — a design originally submitted for the 1932 quarter but not adopted until the 2022 redesign. As VDDO-001, this is the primary doubled die obverse for whatever specific 2024 Women Quarter issue it was discovered on, establishing the baseline entry for future DDO discoveries on the same date.
