2023 VDDR VDDR-004
Error
Description
Fourth variety documenting eastward doubling on the upper central scale pole and lower left pan line of the 2023-P Eleanor Roosevelt Quarter, VDDR-004 completes an unusually large family of doubled die reverses sharing the same pattern across independently manufactured working dies. Four DDR varieties exhibiting identical displacement on a single quarter design is statistically rare and suggests the hub-to-die relationship for this reverse carried a built-in tendency toward eastward misalignment. From a die-making perspective, each working die is pressed into shape by the hub in a multi-step hubbing process, and if the setup consistently allows a slight shift in one direction, the result propagates across dies manufactured during the same production window. For collectors, four related but distinct varieties means each coin must be attributed to its specific die using secondary die markers — the doubling alone cannot distinguish VDDR-002 from 003 or 004. The Eleanor Roosevelt quarter reverse, designed to honor her pivotal role in establishing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, has proven unexpectedly productive for die variety research.
