Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar and attributed as Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDO-013, this Jefferson Nickel carries a Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the obverse. Very nice spread is visible on Jefferson's left eyelid and eyebrow, where the tilted hub subtly thickened these fine facial features — a location that makes the doubling compelling because it alters the portrait's expression. A die scratch below the E of WE provides an additional attribution diagnostic. This die pair constitutes a combination variety: the reverse is listed as WDDR-126, meaning both sides of coins from this die marriage exhibit hub doubling. Combination doubled dies affecting both obverse and reverse are uncommon in the Jefferson Nickel series and elevate the significance of specimens from this die pair. Class VIII doubling results from the hub tilting at an angle during hubbing, producing spread that radiates from a pivot point. Ribar's contributions to modern Jefferson Nickel variety documentation have substantially expanded the catalog for recent dates.
