Description

Produced by a Class VIII tilted hub mechanism, the 2023 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-003 displays doubling on the tops of the second, third, and fourth columns and on the right inside portion of the large semicircular window above the center door of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during the die-making process, producing a characteristic directional spread that differs from the rotational or pivotal shifts of other doubling classes. Die markers on the obverse include die chips on Jefferson's chin. The reverse carries several diagnostics: a die dot above the A of STATES, a die dot to the upper right of the small left window, a die dent above the first A of AMERICA, and a die gouge in the field above the roof on the left side of the building. The concentration of doubling on the columns and semicircular window—architectural features central to the Monticello design—makes this variety visually coherent, with the affected elements forming a logical cluster across the building's facade.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: Die chips on Jefferson's chin.
  • Reverse: Die dot above A of STATES; die dot to upper right of small left window; die dent above first A of AMERICA; die gouge in field above roof on left side of building.
