Description

Designated among the "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties, WDDO-003 on the 2023-P Jefferson Nickel is a Class VIII tilted hub doubled die showing very strong doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST that decreases in intensity from left to right, with additional doubling on the 23 of the date and the P mintmark. The "Best Of" designation is reserved for the most visually dramatic and collectible doubled dies in the nickel series — a distinction that elevates this variety above routine attributions. Class VIII tilted hub doubling results from an angular misalignment between the hub and die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread that varies in intensity across the design. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, WDDO-003 represents modern die variety research at its most precise. The 2023 Philadelphia Mint nickel carries the standard 75% copper / 25% nickel composition and features the current Jefferson portrait introduced in 2006. The decreasing left-to-right intensity pattern is characteristic of tilted hub mechanics, where the tilt axis creates maximum displacement at one side and minimal displacement at the other.
