2023 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

Discovered by Brian A. Ribar, this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel carries Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible on Jefferson's left eyelid — a subtle but diagnostically significant location where even slight hub misalignment produces a discernible secondary impression against the smooth contour of the portrait. What makes this variety particularly notable is its pairing with WDDR-123: the same physical die exhibits both obverse and reverse doubling, meaning a single die received misaligned hubbings on both faces during production. Paired DDO/DDR varieties are less common than standalone doubled dies because they require hub errors on two separate hubbing operations for the same die. Die markers reinforce the attribution — a die gouge appears above the Y of LIBERTY, and a series of die gouges are positioned between the E of WE and the first T of TRUST on the obverse. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel continues the Jamie Franki obverse portrait introduced in 2006, and Class VIII varieties on this modern design are actively pursued by contemporary variety specialists.
