2023 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-008

Description

Jefferson's eyelids display the telltale spread of Class VIII tilted hub doubling on this 2023 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, making WDDO-008 one of the more visually striking doubled die obverses in recent years. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDO-008, the eyelid location means the doubling directly affects the portrait's facial expression — a feature that draws immediate attention even at moderate magnification. Class VIII doubling from a tilted hub produces a rotational displacement that can appear quite different depending on its position relative to the tilt axis, and on the eyelids it creates a subtle widening effect. Obverse die markers include a die gouge in the field to the lower right of the N of IN. On the reverse, multiple markers aid attribution: a slanted die scratch through the C of MONTICELLO, a die gouge above the large semicircular window, and a die gouge above and between the NU of UNUM. The 2023 Jefferson Nickel continues to bear the original Felix Schlag obverse portrait that debuted in 1938, though a temporary replacement by Jamie Franki was used from 2006 through 2024.
