Description

Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the 2023-P WDDO-005 Jefferson nickel presents Class VIII tilted hub doubling on GOD WE TRUST from the obverse motto. Class VIII doubling — caused by the hub contacting the die at an angle rather than parallel — produces a distinctive tilted secondary impression that affects the legend unevenly. The affected portion of the motto, spanning three words, provides a clear diagnostic window for confirmation. Obverse die markers include a die scratch extending from the right side of the second T in TRUST, a die scratch on the left side of Jefferson's mouth, and a die scratch above the designer's initials JNF — the mark of Jamie N. Franki, whose obverse portrait design has appeared on Jefferson nickels since 2006. No reverse die markers have been noted. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2023-P WDDO-005, this variety demonstrates that hub doubling continues to occur in modern Mint production despite advances in die-making technology. The specific combination of die scratches near TRUST, Jefferson's mouth, and the JNF initials allows precise attribution of this working die.
