Description

America's first major prima ballerina and a citizen of the Osage Nation, Maria Tallchief is honored on the 2023 American Women Quarters series — and this first VarietyVista-designated doubled die obverse for the 2023-P Maria Tallchief quarter shows medium spread to the northwest on the 20 of the date, ear, and lower hair curl above the ear. The medium classification indicates doubling visible under moderate magnification, with enough displacement that the doubled image separates from the primary design rather than merely thickening it. The portrait of Tallchief in ballet pose provides detailed facial features and hair where the northwest shift creates identifiable secondary impressions. As the first cataloged DDO for this design, VDDO-001 establishes the baseline for doubled die documentation on the Tallchief quarter. The American Women Quarters program (2022-2025) features five new reverse designs annually honoring pioneering women, and each design's unique die introduces fresh potential for hubbing anomalies. Doubled dies on the obverse of these quarters affect the common Washington portrait used across all issues in the series.
