2023 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
ErrorDescription
Fourth doubled die obverse cataloged by the Wexler Team for the 2023 Philadelphia Jovita Idar Quarter, WDDO-004 exhibits doubling northwest on the lower hair detail — a subtle displacement where secondary impressions appear above and to the left of the primary design. A retained die break sits between QUA in QUARTER and the T in TEACHER, where a fractured die section remained in place, creating a raised irregular bridge on struck coins. Extensive die markers on both sides provide multiple confirmation points. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2023-P 25-cent JI WDDO-004, no additional cross-references are known. The Jovita Idar Quarter honors the Texas-born journalist, teacher, and civil rights activist who championed Mexican-American rights in the early twentieth century. The retained die break between QUARTER and TEACHER is especially diagnostic, as these structural failures are readily visible without high magnification and provide an immediate sorting criterion before examining the subtler hair doubling. Doubling to the NW on the lower hair detail Die Markers: Obverse: Many small die cracks and chips on and below the eye, on the nose, the jaw, and the ponytail right of IGWT. Two small die gouges on the neck left of the date. Small die gouge between the R and U in TRUST. Die gouge at the bottom left corner of the L in LIBERTY. Die gouge left of the B in LIBERTY. Reverse: Large die crack extends NE from the rim at Idar's hands with a large retained die break between the QUA in QUARTER and the T in TEACHER. Die chip on Idar's left eye. Numerous N/S die cracks on the head and hair, including one extending to the rim. Die gouge at the top of the I in RIGHTS.
