Description

Identified as WWHO-001, this doubled working hub obverse variety on the 2023-P Edith Kanaka'ole quarter exhibits strong doubling to the northeast on the eyelid of Washington's portrait. Working hub doubling is mechanistically distinct from the more common working die doubling: it occurs one step earlier in die manufacturing, when a master die impresses a working hub, meaning every working die produced from that hub carries the same doubling. This upstream origin means the doubling can cross design boundaries entirely. WWHO-001 is documented on both 2023-P Kanaka'ole and Roosevelt quarters, indicating the affected hub produced dies for multiple reverse pairings within the American Women Quarters program. Collectors should watch for this obverse doubling on other 2023 quarter designs as well. The strong northeast spread on the eyelid is visible under moderate magnification and serves as the primary pickup point for attribution.

Attribution History

  • None known Comments: WWHO-001 is known on 2023-P Kanaka'ole and Roosevelt quarters. It appears to be from a working hub that was used to produce working dies for both designs. Due to this, it may also be found on other 2023 quarter designs.
